How to properly ripen pears
Pears are one of the few fruits that do not mature well if allowed to ripen on the tree. That is why they are picked in an unripened state and carefully packed, stored and shipped in that condition. Proper ripening greatly increases the sugar and juice content of pears. A popular misunderstanding is that pears should be placed in the refrigerator when still green. To ripen pears at home, let them stand at room temperature in a covered bowl, brown paper bag or poly bag from the produce department. To determine when they are ready, press your thumb into the neck and see if you can make a small impression in the flesh. If you feel the skin yielding to gentle pressure, the pear is ripe. (Color may not be a criterion of ripeness.) To enhance the flavor, chill before serving.
REMEMBER:
Eating pears daily is a great way to get started on the 5-a day plan — providing you with fiber, vitamins and potassium necessary for a healthy diet.
